Ralph Timothy Keeshen
I was fortunate to spend time with my grandfather Ralph Wright, who taught me drawing techniques. He was artistic himself, he animated for Disney and was the voice as Eeyore of Winnie the Pooh.
My work reaches from coast-to-coast, with interest from landscapes to spatial art. I was educated at the Forman School in Litchfield, CT for my High School years. My concentration there was in set design/video production. I graduated with honors.
I was awarded a scholarship at San Jose State. While there, I created site specific installations in city parks/public spaces. One exhibit stretched for a mile through the city. I pursued wood working/large-scale sculpture graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. While attending San Jose State, my work was exhibited at Scheffield Hallan University in England, where I attended as an exchange student.
As a post-graduate, I lived in New York City exploring cityscapes and space through color and geometric form, working with acrylic on canvas. I then spent two decades in Portland, Maine with Mainely Frames Gallery as a master picture framer. During this time I built a 14 foot sailboat and sailed for many years on Casco Bay. This access to the water encouraged a new direction in my work, utilizing an impressionist style of painting.
Along the way my interests developed in building maintenance-another venue for using my strong visual and hands on skills. I am now a facilities coordinator at the Falmouth House at a retirement community, OceanView at Falmouth. I continue exploring woodworking as well as painting. I live in Falmouth Maine with my wife and our dogs, where I paint landscapes which are a transformation from my earlier geometric works.
Painting information
My paintings are painted with a base of Golden brand black gesso with Liqutex heavy body acrylic in the medium magenta color on top of that. I use 12 oz. Fredrix canvas with the stretched size of 24″x16″ on standard Fredrix stretcher bars. The paintings are then protected with Liqutex varnish and Soluvar.
Artist Statement
I have been painting to transfer the feeling of being in a place while working on a sense of light and color.
My work focuses on water scenes as well as city scenes. The water scenes are impressionistic views of a place or location conveying the feeling that flows through me at that time. The city scenes are views of a given place displaying the geometrical elements of a certain location.
My recent work reflects a merging of these views incorporating both elements. Maine presents the perfect backdrop for providing a visually interesting juxtaposition of the energy that the water brings out with the buildings representing time . Using many layers of color in my paintings allows me to convey the energy that light and color represents.
YouTube
I created a channel where I have a quick video about each painting I painted, see them here.
